Joanna Zathey




Joanna Zathey was born in 1975 in Wrocław in the musicians’ family. She graduated from the Karol Szymanowski State Lower- and Upper-Level School of Music in Wrocław in professor Włodzimierz Zalipski’s piano class. From 1994 to 1999 she studied in the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań in professor Grzegorz Kurzyński’s piano class. She received a diploma with honours. She is currently a lecturer in the Academy of Music in Poznań and a teacher accompanist in the violin class in the Henryk Wieniawski General Upper Level School of Music in Poznań. In 2005 she completed postgraduate studies on chamber music in professor Dora Schwarzberg class in the Accademia di Musica in Pinerolo (Italy)
She was a prizewinner in numerous competitions.
3rd prize at the 1st National Duets Competition in Zakopane in 1998,
1st prize at the Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music in Krakow in 2001 (duo category),
3rd prize at the Friedrich Kuhlau International Flute Competition in Uelzen (Germany) in 2003 (trio category),
1st prize and the special prize “Premio Mozart” at the National Performance Competition in Riccione (Italy) in 2004 (category: chamber music groups),
1st I’Unanimite prize at the International UFAM Competition in Paris in 2005 (category: chamber music groups).
She also takes part at violin competitions together with her students, where she receives diplomas of appreciation for an outstanding accompaniment:

She improved her piano and chamber music skills under the guidance of such professors as: Włodzimierz Obidowicz, Nelson Goerner,Maria Szwajger – Kułakowska, Andrzej Tatarski, Paul Gulda, Werner Bartschi, Robert Kabara, Roman Totenberg, Herman Krebbers, Ana Czumaczenko, Wen Sin Yang.
Furthermore, she performed during various festivals, inter alia, “The Talents Week” in Tarnów, the Poznań Musical Spring,
the International Art of Word “Verba Sacra” Festival in Poznań. She was also an accompanist during summer masterclasses (Żagań, Krzyżowa, Bałoszyce).
She performed in Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, and in Italy (inter alia, in Polish Institutes in Paris and Vienna, as well as in Polish Embassy in Prague).
She co-originates a chamber music group Trio Cantabile (two flutes and piano). In November 2004, on request of President of Poznań, the Trio honoured the occasion of partnership cooperation between Poznań and Hanover (concerts in the CUBUS gallery and in the New Town Hall in Hanover among others).
She was invited to participate as a competition pianist in the 13th Henryk Wieniawski International Competition, which is taking place in October 2006 in Poznań.
Repertoire of the pianist covers majority of compositions from violin as well as flute, clarinet, and viola literature.
